The Sleep Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (Guangyi First Hospital) was inaugurated in Guangzhou on August 17. As the largest sleep medicine center in South China, it has established a comprehensive prevention and treatment model integrating sleep disorder screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up management, and will be dedicated to formulating individualized comprehensive treatment plans for patients with sleep-related diseases.
According to Guangzhou media "Yangcheng Evening News", Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and recipient of the Medal of the Republic, stated at the unveiling ceremony that more than 38% of adults in China have sleep problems. Sleep problems are caused by a variety of factors, and they can also lead to a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular, endocrine, and nervous system disorders. Therefore, Zhong Nanshan emphasized that research on sleep problems requires the joint efforts of multiple disciplines.

Zhong Nanshan shared, "I myself once had symptoms of sleep breathing difficulties." He often had nightmares during sleep and woke himself up, which greatly affected his health. Later, after finding the cause and undergoing related ENT surgery, he no longer experiences similar situations.
Zhong Nanshan mentioned that one-third of a person's life is spent in sleep, and many diseases are closely related to sleep quality, such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, coronary heart disease, and depression. He said: "The Sleep Medicine Center is not simply about solving patients' problems of not being able to fall asleep or sleep well. Sleep is a disease related to multiple fields, and we need the joint efforts of multiple fields."
He shared that a patient of Zhong Nanshan had suffered from high blood pressure for a long time. Later, after consultation, the patient had very obvious sleep apnea syndrome. Due to upper airway obstruction during sleep, difficulty breathing led to very high cardiovascular blood pressure. After the patient's sleep problem was resolved, the high blood pressure was also relieved.
"I started researching sleep-related diseases 40 years ago. At that time, there were no computers or recorders. At that time, a doctor would sit by the patient's bedside for 8 hours all night and use a large stack of respiratory recording paper to record whether the patient had sleep breathing problems," said Zhong Nanshan.
He hopes that doctors will pay more attention to patients' sleep conditions and ask them one more question: "How do you sleep?" to help patients completely solve their illnesses and better serve the people. The medical staff of various departments at the Sleep Medicine Center of Guangyi First Hospital are based on clinical practice to solve the sleep problems that trouble ordinary people, and better serve the health of the people in Guangzhou, Guangdong, and even the whole country. "In addition to doing a good job in medical services, we must also identify the main direction."
The Sleep Medicine Center of Guangyi First Hospital has 23 sleep breathing monitoring rooms, 23 sets of full-night polysomnography (PSG), 10 sets of portable sleep monitors (PM), 1 set of mattress monitoring systems, 5 multi-mode pressure titration systems, and 25 non-invasive ventilators, which can effectively solve patients' sleep problems.
The center has also established a multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment team, including respiratory, ENT, oral, neuropsychology, weight loss, cardiovascular, and endocrine departments, to formulate individualized comprehensive treatment plans for patients.
