[First-time Parents] The Sleeping Position Most Likely to Cause Suffocation in Babies: 4 Key Points to Prevent SIDS

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) usually occurs in infants under one year of age, most commonly between two and three months old. In the 1980s, the Dutch medical community discovered that sleeping on the stomach was one of the risk factors. Later, other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and the United States also successively found that infants sleeping on their stomachs were most prone to sudden death, and called for infants not to sleep in this position. The results were significant, and the number of infant deaths in their sleep was greatly reduced.

It turns out that when an infant sleeps on their stomach, if they wake up startled in their sleep, their neurological response may not react immediately, leading to suffocation and death in their sleep. In 2011, the Taiwan Pediatric Association referred to the latest announcement from the United States in this regard and formulated the following recommendations to prevent SIDS.

2. The sleeping surface must be firm and can be covered with a fitted sheet.

3. It is not recommended for infants to sleep with others, but it is recommended for them to sleep in the same room as their parents. Parents can hold the infant in bed for feeding or comforting, but should return the infant to their own crib before the parents go to sleep. In addition, twins or multiple births must also sleep in separate beds.

4. There should be no soft objects in the infant's crib, such as pillows, quilts, comforters, blankets, or wool products. The infant's crib should be firm and properly covered with a fitted sheet.
